Review of I Am Legend
As a fan of the 70's first remake of the novel I Am Legend, starring Charlton Heston and entitled The Omega Man, I was unsure exactly what to expect from this Will Smith film. On the whole, I enjoyed it, though I thought the visual effects of the mutants in the story were a bit video game-like and not entirely believable. Smith was very effective as an isolated, lonely man who had come to relative terms with his solitary existence after losing his family and the rest of society because of a man-made viral outbreak. There was a religious aspect in both films that was treated quite differently. In The Omega Man, the mutants were normal humans, though they had taken on mutant features such as altered skin coloration and severe sensitivity to light. They also had a leader who saw himself as something of a prophet, leading the rest of the mutant survivors in a communal environment. In Legend, the mutants were completely de-evolved humans, acting more like pack dogs and having a thirst for human flesh. It was Smith himself who was struggling with his beliefs, as he had come to believe that God did not exist as he survived in a post-apocalyptic New York City.
