Dark City (1998) to be re-released in a new Director's Cut
Released just months before the worldwide hit and generally acclaimed first Matrix film, another similar film came and went without any of the fanfare that the original Matrix or its sequels generated. It was what you call a "sleeper", though the Tomatometer registers it at 75%. Nevertheless, I saw Dark City and was spectacularly impressed for its story, characters and visuals -- so much so that when I eventually saw The Matrix, I was underwhelmed since Dark City seemed to be more Blade Runner while the other film was more like Star Wars. Starring Rufus Sewell, Keifer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly and William Hurt, it told the story of a group of humans living in a city where there was only night, and there was a mysterious group of pale-skinned individuals known as the Strangers who controlled the city. The original trailer was intriguing, but did not have the marketing blitz associated with its better-known sibling. I highly recommend seeing the re-release when it hits stores on July 29, since the first was a true masterpiece.
